With stereoscopic or 3D movies and televisions becoming very popular there is a strong push to add 3D capability to mobile phone platforms. Movidius' Myriad platform has 3D photo and video capability built into the hardware and provides a solid platform for 3D capture, encode and decode software.

Mobile handset devices lend themselves well to 3D as the display is at a fixed distance and orientation to the viewer which allows for the use of glass-less display systems. Equally the form factor of most mobile phones allows for the correct required separation between the two cameras at ~63mm which allows for an accurate simulation of the separation of human eyes. Couple this with the faster replacement times for mobile phones and some industry experts believe 3D will come to mobile phones faster even than the rapid migiration of large screen TVs. However 3D format specifications are still evolving so having a flexible platform such as Myriad is key to allow handset device designers to react quickly to these important changes.
